Stereotactic Biopsy

Lottsa fun…. ok, not really.

You lie on a cot-type bed suspended above a machine that is similar to a mammograpy unit.  The only difference…the cot has a hole through which a breast dangles and gets compressed for the machine to insert a needle (vacuum) through which a string of cells is biopsied. They do administer lidocaine prior to the procedure.  Believe it or not, the breast does not have that many nerves and it is not painful.

In my case, I had to drop my shoulder, arm and breast through so that they might get to the location.  Unfortunately, not sufficient breast tissue would support the length of the needle.
